This invention relates to an ignition timing control system for an internal combustion engine, and more particularly to a control system wherein the ignition timing is controllably retarded from a reference timing for decreasing the amount of NO.sub.x produced.
2. Description of the Related Art
The NO.sub.x, which has been considered as a nuisance air polluting substance in the recent automotive engine development, is a collection of nitrogen monoxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO.sub.2) discharged together with soot at the combustion chamber of the engine. The NO.sub.x is produced mainly as a result of combustion of lean air-fuel mixture or under the high temperature conditions due to the backward movement of the flame front of the air-fuel mixture ignited by compression heating. In order to reduce the production of NO.sub.x or at least delay it, there have been proposed various kinds of NO.sub.x control systems for an internal combustion engine.
The prior art NO.sub.x control systems have utilized a basic characteristic that the greater the retardation of ignition timing, the more significant is the effect in reducing NO.sub.x. That is, while the engine is operating with lean air-fuel mixture, the ignition timing is delayed to the lower end of the compression stroke, with the best NO.sub.x reducing effect. Therefore, the ignition timing is gradually retarded with the lapse of time, thus gradually increasing the ratio of the rich air-fuel mixture to the lean air-fuel mixture.
However, as shown in FIG. 5, when the engine is operating with, for example, rich air-fuel mixture, the optimum ignition timing (ON.sub.O timings) for the minimum amount of NO.sub.x is at a timing different from that for the minimum amount of HC or power. Furthermore, the optimum NO.sub.x reducing timing for an engine with a low engine speed is at a timing which is too early for the minimum amount of HC or power as shown in FIG. 6.
