Most vehicles that are driven on the public roads are required by law to have a wheel speed sensor that is mounted on one of the wheels and that is part of an electronic wheel speed sensor unit that includes circuitry that converts the rotation of the wheel into electrical signals for use by an engine control module. The wheel speed sensor output is a representation of the number of revolutions per minute of the vehicle wheel relative to an ambient reference. The wheel speed output of such a conventional circuit is used by the engine control module in connection with the monitoring, controlling and governing of the engine that drives the vehicle wheels. For example, the engine control module can use the wheel speed data in connection with a cruise control system that controls the speed of the vehicle. The cruise control system has a desired speed setting that is entered by the driver. The wheel speed sensor data is filtered and processed by the cruise control system control algorithm, which in turn controls the torque output from the engine to the wheel speed sensor inputs. The wheel speed sensor output thus controls or influences the speed of the vehicle.
In a similar fashion, the engine control module can also use the wheel speed sensor data in connection with an anti-lock braking system that controls braking forces applied by the vehicle. The wheel speed sensor output can also be used for controlling vehicle suspension systems, for example.
