Photoshop is a demanding program, so it pays to have a good understanding of how the file is organized before you dive in. It’s a good idea to have a basic understanding of the file structure in general, so the rest of this chapter provides an overview of how files are organized.

Understanding image file organization

You can think of an image file as having a collection of layers, which is like the layers that are used in a page layout document. A good organizing principle is to put multiple layers on a single screen, allowing different edits to be applied to each layer at once.

Although you’re likely to start with a flat file, it’s possible to organize a file into layers if you’re more organized than most users. The layer organization makes it easier to transfer files between programs. The files can be edited in any program that can use layers, such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Publisher. Figure 1-1 illustrates the basic file structure.

**Figure 1-1:** The file folder typically holds a single Photoshop file.

A folder contains images and other supporting files, and it can have subfolders. Each image has a name of some form and typically comes with a number appended to the end (called a version number, usually between 0001 and 9999). The image may also have a sequential number used to indicate when it was created. Most software has some form of auto-saving to indicate progress. The image also stores a thumbnail of the image, which is stored in the root folder. You can find the location of the thumbnail in the image’s Properties dialog box (Window menu) or by choosing Window⇒Properties (Figure 1-2), or by right-clicking on the image.

**Figure 1-2:** Find the thumbnail here, too.

For the most part, Photoshop saves your projects in a folder structure created automatically when you open the program. You can leave the folder structure intact or delete the ones you don’t need. If you’re using a traditional hard disk, you may want to use a separate hard drive for storage. If you’re using a memory card, you don’t need to worry about the location of the file on the card.

Understanding layers

A layer is the most important part of a Photoshop file, and you can use it to create both text and images that you can manipulate.

The difference between a text layer and an image layer

Adobe Photoshop — the original design software — has been a staple of artists and graphic designers for a long time. It is fast and powerful, and it has helped numerous users in many different fields achieve their creative goals. Adobe Photoshop has advanced considerably over the years, and now even comes with voice recognition to further simplify the life of users.

The simplicity of the software is exactly why photographers prefer Adobe Photoshop instead of Elements. Elements is an easy-to-use alternative that has all the basic features of Photoshop but lacks the more advanced features in the latter.

The most recent versions of Photoshop are the CS suite, which includes Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Creative Cloud. Elements was a standalone version of Photoshop, and is now part of the CS suite and Creative Cloud. Elements will be supported until 2020, and since then, it will be supported for a shorter time.

There are two versions of Photoshop Elements: Standard and Personal. The standard version has some new features, while the Personal version has a more simple and customized user interface. Both versions are extremely easy to use.

A key feature of Adobe Photoshop is the brush. Brushes come in different shapes and sizes, and different colors. Brushes can be easily transferred to different areas of a photo or image.

This tutorial will teach you how to use the brush in Photoshop Elements, how to change brush sizes and colors, and how to apply the same brush as well as different brush strokes to different layers.

What do you want to accomplish in this tutorial?

1. Create an image with a vertical brush stroke

The first thing you want to do in this tutorial is to create a small image with a brush stroke that is vertical.

Start by opening the image you want to edit. I have created a small icon in the middle of this page, and I’ll use it as a reference point.

I will place this icon in the center of the image. You can simply drag it and drop it wherever you like.

Then, I will use the brush to draw a vertical stroke in the empty space. You can use all the painting tools, and you can use the selection tool to select the brush strokes.

I will use the Move tool to draw the brush strokes by pressing the M key on my keyboard, and I will draw in a horizontal direction by pressing the Right arrow key and the Down arrow key.

Tip: You can rotate your canvas 360 degrees. Just click the

1. Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a polarization-conversion sheet and a manufacturing method of the sheet.
2. Description of the Related Art
In recent years, energy saving and environmental protection are increasingly required for light sources used in papermaking, printing, finishing, white-board and so on. Further, the higher speed and higher output of a copying machine and an electrostatic recording system is also desired in order to reduce paper consumption and toner consumption. In order to realize these requests, it is important to obtain a light source that is reliable in intensity and stable in light emission.
As a light source for a reflection type exposure system, organic electroluminescent (EL) devices and light-emitting diodes (LED) are given. Each of these light-emitting devices is, however, deficient in intensity and durability. Especially, the organic EL devices are deficient in durability.
As a light source for the reflection type exposure system, in order to realize the higher speed and higher output, a planar light source is demanded. The planar light source, which has a light output of a predetermined level, is most suitable for a full-color exposure system. Accordingly, if the light from the planar light source is reflected on a photo-sensitive sheet, an image cannot be formed on the sheet.
As a solution of this problem, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2004-260252 describes a polarization-conversion sheet. The polarization-conversion sheet has a layer that comprises colloidal particles and a fluorescent substance. On a surface of the layer, a dichroic mirror is formed that reflects a light in the predetermined direction and allows a light in the direction perpendicular to the predetermined direction to pass. Since the reflection in the plane of the polarization-conversion sheet (the direction of polarization of a light reflected by the dichroic mirror) is inhibited, a light from a light source is efficiently guided to the direction of a photo-sensitive sheet without a loss. Accordingly, a higher speed and a higher output can be realized without lowering the intensity of the light.
As described above, the light emitted from the light source is reflected by the dichroic mirror, and the reflected light is directed to the photo-sensitive sheet. Therefore, the dichroic mirror needs to be cleaned. If dust is adhered on the dichroic mirror, the dust is reflected by the dichroic mirror. Accordingly, the dust cannot be cleaned

Brushes in Photoshop:

The Painter’s Brush is a brush used to paint with pixels. You can also use it to draw straight lines, paint patterns and apply filters. It doesn’t have many settings and is simple to use.

The Pencil Brush is a brush that’s used to paint around objects to soften hard edges. You can set the smoothing to Low, Medium and High and the hardness of the stroke to Soft, Medium, or Hard.

The Eraser Brush is a brush that can be used to paint with pixels. It’s used to erasing objects and correcting mistakes.

The Smudge Brush is used to smudge objects over an area. This is used to create smoke, blur, create a photographic effect.

The Clone Stamp Brush is used to copy pixels over a certain area. Used for correcting mistakes and painting objects on top of other objects.

The Fractal Brush is a brush that you can use to create patterns.

While the Brush Brush is a brush that allows you to paint with pixels.

Photoshop’s Vignettes:

The Vignette effect is a filter that adds a soft, blurred effect to the edges of your image.

The Defringe effect blurs the outline of the subject while preserving the edges of the subject.

The Soften Edges effect blurs the edges and softens hard edges in your image.

The Hard Edge effect preserves hard edges while softening the rest of the image.

The Posterize effect strips away the color from pixels outside of a certain area.

The Color Burn effect does the same, but it only affects black and white pixels.

The desaturate effect turns all colors to grayscale.

The Color Dodge effect makes all colors brighter, while the Frosted effect makes colors fade out.

The Luminosity effect alters the brightness of your image.

The Gradient tool is used to apply a specific gradient across your image. There’s a Gradient Fill, a Gradient Stroke and a Gradient Shape.

The Gaussian blur effect blurs all pixels within a specified area.

The Photo Filter effect is a filter that lets you apply a specific effect to a photo of your choice. For example, you can create a Retro look with the Vintage Photo effect.
